H-H Historical Quotes:

These are some quotes from important historical people in my Hrasi-Human universe. They all have something interesting to say. Michael Jarret and Fuko Orinoko are two human politicians from a critical point in our future history (about two and a half centuries from now). They haven't appeared in any stories yet, but they might. Bad things happen to them, and the US, and the UN, and the world in general, but that's far too long a story for here...

-VNT

"The sher'amn is, in a word, the greatest warrior and asset a lord could ever hope to have. Assassins, bodyguards, protectors and vassals… A successful lord will gather her and her sisters around him as quickly and often as he can. Yet the sher'amn cannot be courted or pursued, or at the least not if one wishes to ever truly be able to trust her. This does not mean that there is nothing that can be done to seek her out; it means only that nothing can be done overtly. To seek a sher'amn is really a trivial matter: one needs only habitually carry oneself as a proper lord. Authority, power, grace, poise, and nobility are the things she will always flock to, and their foils the things from which she will always turn away."

- Lord Hesmenthe Yoichi, "The Way"

"Treat her in every way as well as you can; the adoration and respect you lavish upon her will only serve to further bind her to you. She may be your servant, but deal with her as an equal, always as a friend asking a favor. She may be your concubine, but treat her as though she was your cherished wife and do not press her for her bedside any more than your weakness of will demands. She may be your assassin and bodyguard, but keep her close to your side, be loath to send her from it, and never ask her to suffer or die for you unless you are truly desperate. Then when you ask her for a meal it will always be well-prepared and safe beyond question, when you ask her for a night's company she will be willing and enthusiastic, and when you ask her to suffer and die for you she will throw herself into harm's way gladly."

- Lord Hesmenthe Yoichi, "The Way"

"Love must be there, as must duty, but understand above all that your focus and strength must stem from subservience. Humility tempers a sher'amn spirit, gives her inner peace and calm, rids her of the ambition and ego that kills the men who try to wield our lleiri. Remember that it is living our lives on our knees that gives us the ability to stand before all others."

- S'jet Yoichi, "Guide for the Sher'amn"

"In all cases step quietly. Why expose yourself to the enemy earlier than you must? Be as your enemies are to befriend them, be as their servants are to infiltrate their households, or be as the background is to go undistinguished, but do not be as you naturally are. Only fools display their loyalties and thus their plans at the tavern before they assault the castle. Such behavior causes fools to find themselves hobbled at an enemy lord's feet, at best a subject of ransom and at worst a subject of interrogation. Step quietly."

- S'jet Yoichi, "Assassin's Manual"

"I still maintain that we can't know too much. Technology is the only thing left for us - god is dead. We can't go on deluding ourselves that there's anyone guiding our way. It's just us, and there's no safety net out there if we screw up. Technology is going to be the one thing between extinction and us when the universe decides to throw a big rock or a supernova our way. Me, I'd rather not let the universe decide when we've lived long enough."

- Democratic nominee Micheal Jarret, "Debate excerpts from the 83rd US president's election"

"America has withstood the test of time - 83 presidents, can you believe that? I've great respect for anything that has stayed so strong for so long. Let's not dream too much - all civilizations, no matter how great, eventually fall under the grinding force of the great march of time. In our bat of the cosmic eyelash, however, we've done great things, and there's still plenty of time for us to do more. Let's hasten to the task - forget how many tomorrows there are and simply act as though each will be the last we'll ever have. That way, by the time the final tomorrow arrives we'll have jumped farther ahead than any of us could ever dream, and maybe we'll have figured out how to survive in the space between blinks."

- 83rd president Fuko Orinoko, "Inaugural address"

More may come in a new, separate document, but that's all they have to say for now. Oh, and yes, I know that they're not all politically correct. Consider the situations and times they're supposed to be from. Those two Hrasi come from a culture that's much more PC than its human historical equivalent and the two humans are from a US which has had another two centuries to mature as a group of people as well as an independent nation. I don't necessarily agree with them or share their views, so don't take it out on me, or at least do so in a well-thought-out manner.
